Walter & Florence Grob - Update May 2009
North American Baptist Conference Mission in Cameroon, Africa
It has been far too long since the last newsletter, therefore it is probably most appropriate to give a summary of last term in Cameroon and the present home assignment:
Most recent term completed: September 2004 to October 2008
Ministries:
Walter – is Treasurer/Comptroller of the Cameroon Baptist Convention. In this financial stewardship ministry Walter works with 10 staff of the convention’s Central Accounting Office to maintain an accounting system for over 100 ministries/departments involved in evangelism, missionary funded efforts, education, health and administration. The mandate is for good accounting, proper cash flow management and diligent internal audit checking. While this is not front line ministry, good accounting of God’s resources can be a powerful witness. Most of this term was a struggle without an assistant comptroller. The Cameroonian assistant left for further schooling soon after Walter got to the field. A search was made to replace him but no suitable replacement was forthcoming. John Ochocki and his family arrived on the field only a few months before Walter left. To better share the work load, cash flow management duties were delegated for education and health ministries to financially trained Cameroonians, while the accounting remained centralized to ensure checks and balances.
From April 2005 to the end of the term, Walter also was given the side role of Nkwen Baptist Centre station manager. Nkwen Baptist Centre, located in Bamenda, is the headquarters of the Cameroon Baptist Convention. Out of this station about 15 families reside and over 200 are employed in a wide range of ministries and departments. The station manager is charged with seeing maintenance staff, security staff, rest house staff, mechanics at the garage and those working in the carpentry workshop are working in a well coordinated manner.
On Sundays Walter had the opportunity to teach Sunday School to the Immanuel choir of Nkwen Baptist Church.
Florence - has her own dental practice with 3 other staff. It is one of only 4 dental clinics in the city of Bamenda with a population estimated around 400,000. Playing gospel music in the background is a way of ministering to her patients (and gets their mind off the dental work at hand!)
Music is her passion. She is director of Nkwen Baptist Church’s 120 plus member Immanuel choir and helps coordinate the music ministry of the church.
Current home assignment period: October 2008 to August 2009 (God-willing). We have been able to visit or plan to visit 17 of our 19 supporting churches to appreciate their sending Walter, and to report on what God’s Kingdom work in Cameroon.
Prayer matters:
1. Thankful for churches and individuals who partner in sending out Walter for this critical behind the scenes financial stewardship ministry.
2. Florence’s dental staff to provide good care to the patients while she is away.
3. As ministry continues to expand for the Cameroon Baptist Convention, the staff of the Central Accounting Office will do its part to provide good financial stewardship.
4. The national church in Cameroon and its missionary partners continue to pursue the vision of reaching out to the less reached northern parts of Cameroon.
